There’s a stage in every LTR where you start to get a little too comfortable with each other. Those bar dates and flirty minidresses are replaced with pizza and Netflix nights in your trackies. Of course, it’s a nice feeling to reach the level of chill where you don’t feel the need to slap your face with makeup or dress up to impress your boo. However, when junk food and movies becomes your go-to for date nights, it can spell trouble for your sex life. After all, carb comas, bloated bellies and sauce-stained pyjamas doesn’t exactly inspire most people to jump into bed (apart from to sleep!) Enter, the unhealthy relationship rut.

While there’s nothing wrong with letting go a little, it’s important for the future of the relationship to keep the spark alive. It’s a lot easier to do that when you’re both the happiest, healthiest and most vibrant versions of yourselves. Thankfully, you don’t have to turn into a full on Instagram #fitspo couple to reintroduce some healthy habits into your relationship. Nor do you have to completely ditch those comfy nights on the couch! With just a few simple changes, you can hit refresh on your relationship and escape the rut.

1Rethink your dates

Think about what it was that brought you two together in the first place. Did you bond over your shared passion for surfing or love of the gym? If your common interest was something active, get back to doing that — but this time, as a couple. Not only will it get you off the lounge, it’ll help you fall in love with each other all over again! As for the couples who bonded over cheap beer and Italian food? It’s the perfect opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and try something completely new. 2Set yourselves a challenge

It’s much easier to stick to your health-oriented goals when you’re got a partner doing it with you. So, why not set yourselves a challenge? It could be something like prepping healthy meals for the week every Sunday for a month or starting a new exercise routine. Not only will you be able to keep each other accountable, it’ll be like a little project you do together — adding a renewed sense of purpose to your relationship.

3Spend some time apart

Don’t panic, we’re not going to suggest you guys go on a ‘break’! But sometimes, spending all of your time together isn’t the healthiest thing for the relationship. This is especially the case if you live together! It’s a good idea to regularly spend some time apart — whether it’s a day of solo self-care or going away for the weekend with your friends. This will give you a chance to actually miss each other and will help to keep things fresh.
