Are you treating your diet like it’s a religion?

I was chatting to meditation teacher and dear friend Jacqui Lewis when discussion turn to the fact that we both feel like one of the next ‘trends’ in the wellness world will be a backlash against health extremism.

Afterwards, it occurred to me that quite a lot of people these days are treating health like it’s a religion. By that I mean taking a dogmatic approach to their chosen diet – whether that be vegan, paleo, raw or sugar-free. Becoming so rigidly attached to one set of food ‘rules’ and ‘beliefs’ that you follow them without question and define yourself by them. Or start preaching to everyone about food to try to convert them to your way of eating. Because, even with the best of intentions, there’s nothing more annoying than a person who is preachy about food! Harping on about the way you eat is definitely an easy trap to fall into and something I’m sure I’ve been guilty of in the past from time to time. And just like religious extremism, health extremism can make you judgmental of others who don’t share your health ‘beliefs’.
