If you’ve been to Bali in the last few months, chances are you’ve come across the latest healthy hotspot, Nalu Bowls. If not, they are the ones responsible for the coconut shell smoothie bowls that populate your Instagram feed. With only six items on the menu it may surprise you to hear that Nalu Bowls is the newest café craze – in fact, to call it a café may be a bit of a stretch for what can really only be described as a surf shack. But this little surf hut, which can be found in Bali’s most popular locations – Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu – along with its fruit-laden smoothie bowls is just what one wants when it comes to balmy Bali.
Nalu, being the Hawaiian word for wave, epitomises this eatery, which is often packed with surfers fresh in from the waves. To continue the theme, each bowl is named after a popular global surf break. Choose from Mavericks, a special acai blend; J-Bay, a mix of peanut butter, banana, honey and soy milk; or the unsurprising local favourite, Uluwatu , which has dragon fruit, papaya, banana, raspberry and apple juice. Each come with their own special topping as well as Nalu Bowl’s homemade granola or you can add your own nutrient kick such as bee pollen, goji berries and coconut flakes. All bowls are brimming with fresh, local ingredients, from mango to papaya, coconut, banana, and of course, dragon fruit, and although fruit is undoubtedly the focus, there’s no denying the homemade granola is the hero. Visiting Bali soon? You’ll regret not trying this gem. Stop by for breakfast, lunch or even a snack – you’ll find it’s all you are ever craving after a long hard day lounging by the villa pool.
