No two skincare needs are alike, but when it comes to Asian skin there are some tried and tested tips, tricks and products for achieving complexion perfection (and dodging the dreaded ‘flush’ after a wine or two) that might just work for you as well.
As part of the Priceline Beauty of You campaign, which celebrates the diversity in Australian Beauty, Priceline ambassador Yumi Stynes and Popsugar managing editor Jess Chandra (both beauty savvy women with Asian skin) share their pearls of wisdom…
Asian skincare and beauty tips
TIP: Use a gentle makeup remover
“I don’t think all Asians have this problem, but for me, if I curl my (very straight lashes) and don’t use waterproof mascara, they drop back down almost immediately,” says Jess.
Waterproof mascara may be the only sure-fire way to curl poker-straight lashes, but if you’re not removing it with care you’ll only irritate your skin.
Try: Nivea 3 in 1 Waterproof Makeup Remover ($8.99)
TIP: Oil-free is your best friend
“What a lovely shiny face you have — it really brings our your flushed skin!” said no one, ever. A good night cream will give you the moisture you need without the oil slick.
Try: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Night Concentrate ($19.99)
TIP: If you can’t beat it, disguise it
“The key for me with this product is that it ‘neutralises redness’ — and I don’t just mean for prevention of Asian flush,” says Jess. “Once I got over the weirdness of the green product, I became obsessed. I think, because it’s green, it smooths out into coverage that has a slight yellow tinge, which is perfect for my skin tone.”
Try: L’Oreal Nude Magique CC Cream ($26.95)
TIP: Only wear pink toned foundation if you want to fake a sickie
“I think the thing that some Asian girls have to look out for with foundation, is to find one without any pink in it — you’ve got to look for yellow tones or you look really masky and a bit unwell,” says Yumi. “Revlon have got some good colours for their foundations.”
Jess adds: “My skin falls into the combination/oily category, so anything that works for that skin type has my name written all over it. I don’t want to look super-matte, but I don’t want to look like a ball of grease by the end of the day, which is why this foundation is great for achieving that “dewy” look we aim for throughout the day.”
Try: Revlon ColorStay MakeUp ($34.95)
TIP: Don’t use blush, highlight!
“I don’t wear blush often and will dab illuminator on my cheeks instead,” Jess reveals.
Try: Dr Lewinn’s Illuminiser ($19.99)
TIP: When all else fails, distract everyone with your glossy locks
“With Asian hair you don’t need hair straighteners — we kind of get by without it OK,” says Yumi. “But a bit of Moroccan Argan Oil is really good. It hits fly aways and keeps it all glossy and shiny and gorgeous.”
Try: Moreish Liquid Gold Argan Oil ($29.99)
