When the sun sets on June 20, the shortest and darkest day of the year, 300 brave competitors will challenge themselves in what is said to be one of the toughest fitness challenges in the world: soft sand marathon running.
The first question that comes to mind is why on earth would anyone volunteer for this? World-record holding ultra marathon runner Pat Farmer has launched the Quicksand Marathon to help raise funds to fight youth homelessness. So the answer to the above question is: anyone who’s up for a challenge and willing to put their bodies on the line (literally) for a worthy cause.
The inaugural Quicksand event will light up Maroubra Beach over the course of one night, with the option of three race distances (10km, 21km, 42km) all run on one soft sand track. Competitors will be truly put to the test, with each race leg demanding fitness, strength, stamina and mental grit.
