Make wellness your career series – Part 1 (Should you? Could you?)

PART 1

Should I? Could I? – Why you should follow your wellness passion.

Let’s face it: wellness is big business. According to Global Wellness Summit, an international organisation that brings together leaders and visionaries to positively impact and shape the future of the global spa and wellness industries, those businesses make up a US$3.4 trillion market (that’s around $4.5 trillian Australian!), which is 3.4 times larger than the worldwide pharmaceutical industry.

Wow. Just wow.

It certainly seems that there is plenty of the wellness dollar to go around. What does this mean for you? It means that if you love it and you can make a living out of it, what’s stopping you?

I recommend you look at what you are doing right now and ask yourself: does it make my heart sing?

This question was asked of me by a colleague in my first job after university. It resonated with me like nothing I’d heard before, this notion that I could (or even should) do something that made my heart sing with joy.

What a beautiful, miraculous idea. Do something you truly love AND make a living.

I’ve since thought about the question time and time again in relation to work and it has become like a health check for me every step along the path to my career in wellness.

Does it make my heart sing?

No? Change it.

Yes? Embrace it. Pursue it. Nurture it.

When you follow your passion, amazing things start to happen. It’s like the world starts to rearrange itself and create new paths and opportunities and chance meetings to help you fulfill your potential and dreams. Life takes on new meaning and purpose. Things like study and work become pleasurable and energising. You start to tingle from the inside. Your heart starts to sing.

Vegan mousseAnother lovely little side benefit that makes working in the health, fitness and wellness industry so fulfilling is that you get to surround yourself and connect with like-minded people who share your passions, values and interests. I’ve met so, so many people along the way and love bumping into them, having chai, raw treats and green smoothies, going to seminars and workshops, taking courses, going on retreats with them… the list is endless, but I think you get the idea of how your life changes when you live in the wellness mindset.

If this post all seems to come from the perspective of self-interest rather than service to the community, it does. And it’s supposed to. It’s about why YOU should follow YOUR passion, though it should really be said that it’s a quite incredible industry to participate in as typically the products and services you would be offer are centred around helping others. That’s quite humbling and gratifying.

If you are still reading (and you’re all the way to the end), one can assume that wellness makes your heart sing too. I can tell you that after 15 years of working towards and in a career that truly makes my heart sing, it’s 100 per cent worth it.

So where should you begin? In Part 2 (posted next week), I’ll share a little more of my story and we’ll talk more practically about how to get started along your journey to a career in the wellness biz.

In the meantime, I invite you to do a little meditation. It can be as short (even just a minute) or as long as you have time for. The important thing is to relax enough to be able to tap into the feeling of what could be.

Wellness visualisation

Close your eyes.

Become aware of the present moment.

Take 10 slow, deep breaths.

Think about what makes your heart sing and imagine a life where that becomes your career.

What does it look like? What does it feel like? Where do you go? Who do you meet? What do you do on a daily basis?

Notice any sensations in your body. Sit with this and bask in the potential of living a life where your heart sings.
