Meet our wellness girl crush Claire Obeid!

Imagine a wise old health guru hidden within a young, yoga-toned body. Are you picturing it? Well, that image is the best way we know how to describe Claire Obeid. The Sydney-based yoga teacher, mind-body-soul coach and writer literally glows with health. She’s also one of the kindest, funniest and most understanding people you could ever hope to meet! Claire shares her own special brand of wellness through e-books, events, programs and her lovely website. We’re also lucky enough to have Claire on the Sporteluxe team as one of our expert contributors. After reading this interview we think you’ll love this amazing woman as much as we do!

How do you start your day?

I usually rise between 5:15-5:30am. After freshening up I sit down for 30 minutes of meditation. It’s a devotional practice. It’s my medicine. Next, while sipping a cup of hot water with lemon and cinnamon (I use cinnamon bark) I write in my journal. Usually it’s a celebration or a connection to gratitude. Then I move. Most mornings I hit my yoga mat. I am in love with my self-practice. Depending on the weather I’ll practice outside by the water or at home. After that I shower, have breakfast and then sit down to my work.

What does being healthy mean to you?

Health to me is not just about the food I choose to eat and how my body is functioning, although that is a huge part of it. It’s also about the state of my mind. The emotions and feelings that are guiding my life, the passion and purpose I’ve living from and the ‘health’ of my relationships. The strength and vitality of my body. The creativity that’s flowing in my life. The equilibrium between doing and being. The connection to myself. It’s a truly holistic experience.

How do you nourish your body?

Fuelling my body with clean, fresh and organic produce. I’m a ‘keep it simple, stupid’ kind of gal. I don’t go for complicated or confusing. It has to be food that has been minimally-altered and as close to its natural source as possible. I have a few food rules but I’m also compassionate and soft with myself if these are broken. Nothing is overly rigid. I find that attitude creates stress and anxiety. And I make decisions based on what my body needs. I listen – it’s always communicating to me!

Do you cook? If so what’s your signature healthy dish?

Yes, 90% of my meals are at home. Breakfast, lunch and dinner! My ‘signature’ dish is always changing. Right now I’m cooking up an incredible fennel salad with black olives and dill. So delicious!

Any health secrets you swear by?

Digestive health is the key to everything! Probiotic supplements and probiotic-rich foods, such as kombucha, kefir, yoghurt and cultured veggies, should be in your diet daily. Get your gastro-intestinal tract working and you’ll have a stronger immune system, switched on brain, glowing skin and bountiful energy!

How do you move your body?

Yoga is my saving grace. Stretching. Strengthening. Flowing. Breathing. Bending. Twisting. Connecting. Sometimes I love a big walk by the harbour or along the coast to get my heart rate going. Or I love a super-toning class at Barre Body as well.

What’s your fave healthy indulgence?

Right now it’s a hot chai latte made with coconut milk and a dash of cacao. Or a raw caramel slice. Yum!

Any natural beauty secrets?

Rosehip oil all the way! I use this daily. I also love cleansing my face with almond oil and making a scrub with coconut oil and Himalayan rock salt.

Any tips for bringing more balance into your life?

Yes. Meditate! Seriously, people! I recently recorded my first guided meditation album as I think it’s so important to carve out time for stillness.

What are your fave active wear brands?

Beyond Yoga, lululemon athletica and Lorna Jane are all my wardrobe alongside Teeki yoga pants.

Do you have a personal motto or quote that resonates with you?

Leave it. Change it. Accept it.

This is something I picked up from the incredible Eckhart Tolle, and it’s how I choose to govern my life today. If I can leave it, whether it be a situation or experience, I do. If not, I will change it if possible. When I can’t do either (and often leaving or changing isn’t so easy) then I must accept it. Surrender! It’s changed my life.

Can you share your healthy Sydney address book with us?

I love Egg of the Universe in Rozelle. They do a mean chai. Their spiced kicharis, a rice and dhal dish, is delicious and so good for your tummy. It makes me happy on the inside!

I can always bet on a good smoothie from About Life and I crave their raw caramel slice and ‘Egg Nourishment’ which is a dish of quinoa and scrambled eggs with kale and pesto.

I frequently visit Nature’s Energy in Balmain for a massage and sauna session. I love that place!

Name three things you can’t live without.

Only three? Sorry but it has to be four! My husband. He’s my best friend and the love of my life. Meditation. Also my best friend! My family and friends. Heart-to-heart connection is what makes life mean something. And Mother Nature. She is divine and rocks my world.
