Sitting at a desk all day can take its toll on your health, especially your muscles, especially if you aren’t using them for hours. A great stretch to finish your day with is the seated forward bend, known in yoga terms as paschimottana. Not only is this stretch brilliant for the hamstrings, shoulders and spine it also calms the mind and helps to relieve stress, soothes headaches and reduces fatigue. Which is why it’s the perfect yoga pose for the end of the day.
Want to try this stretch? Remember it’s really important not to force yourself into a forward bend. Learn to recognise the difference between what a deep stretch feels like compared to pain.
- Sit on the floor with your legs straightened out in front of you.
- Activate your feet.
- Inhale, lift and lengthen the front torso just slightly
- Exhale, lean forward from the hip joints and stretch your arms out.
- Stay here for one to three minutes as you inhale lift and exhale bend forward.
Note: if you have any back injuries you should only perform this pose under the guidance of a qualified yoga teacher.
