Feeling stressed and overwhelmed? Here are five simple coping strategies to help you adjust your mindset.
1. Identify the problem thought
When we are wracked with anxiety and stress, the problem always stems from our thoughts. You may feel you can’t control the emotions running through your mind. But once you become conscious of the thought you can uncover the cause.
When we feel anxiety or panic, we are usually focusing on something that we don’t want to happen and are working ourselves up into a state of fear by focusing on the worst case scenario. Take a moment to stop and ask yourself what you are thinking right now and write it down. This will help you begin to uncover the cause of your panic.
2. Come back to the now
Right now, in this moment, you are ok. It is only when your mind takes you off into the future that you get tripped up. Fretting about potential problems that you can’t control will make you feel unsettled. So let go of that thought, and come back to now.
Place your feel firmly on the ground, take a deep belly breath and repeat this affirmation to yourself “Right here, right now all is well. I am safe”.
3. Let it move through your body
The energies of fear, panic and anxiety can be incredibly strong. If we try to keep our body still while there is adrenalin pumping through our veins it only makes it worse.
If you can, step away from your desk or what you are doing and get in to your body. Go for a walk, do some yoga, dance to some music or hit the gym. Let that emotion move through your body rather than trying to contain it.
4. Re-focus on what you want
What is your desired outcome or resolution to the problem you are facing? Take a moment to write it out. When we focus all our attention on what we don’t want, we can end up creating more of it. So, it is time to make a shift.
Each day take time to review what you want to create or experience in your life. How would you feel if this happened? Identify the key feelings that come with this experience and begin to work on feeling them now. Take time each day to close your eyes, imagine your ideal end result and feel the feeling of having it.
5. Use supportive self-talk
When we are wracked with fear, we have to learn how to support ourselves with positive and empowering self-talk. Affirm to yourself that everything will be ok. That everything is working out perfectly and that all your needs will be met.
You may want to write out positive affirmations that you can say out loud daily. Make sure you are loving and supporting yourself through this challenge. Be your own best friend and be kind and gently to yourself in challenging times.
