The first time I went to a Pilates class, I was a little—okay, extremely—intimidated and nervous. On one hand, a reformer machine looks eerily like some sort of torture device, and the other, I was met with the conundrum of what to wear.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the workout itself fired up my core, leg and glute muscles, without ruining my blow dry. But it’s safe to say I had no success in the wardrobe department. I made the mistake of wearing a loose tank, and spent most of the class tugging and adjusting. And I bet I’m not the only person that’s been in this position. After all, whether you’re an avid Pilates goer, dedicated yogi, or ultra-marathoner, you’d know that the right workout gear can make all the difference for your performance and confidence.
Ahead, you’ll find the tried-and-true Pilates essentials that you should always keep on hand to avoid any mishaps (like the one above!).
Fitted tops are a must, unless you’re cool with your abs on display. Aside from offering a bit more coverage, a fitted top will also make it easier to keep an eye on your technique.

Trust me, you do not want your hair getting caught in the reformer but normal elastics normally leave an unsightly kink. Opt for this unique style instead.
