Still, it can sometimes be difficult to find the great ones in this saturated market, so we’ve tracked down six of the best in the app store now.

1. Strava Run

Track your runs and rides with GPS, climb the leaderboards and follow your friends with Strava. The GPS tracking will allow you to follow routes you’ve created or found and view your activity map as you go whilst saving key statistics like distance, pace, speed and calories burned for a little bit of healthy competition.

2. BiteRunner

One of the newest on the market, Biterunner will guage your running ability and provide you with a running program to get you covering a 5km, 10km or 21km distance in no time. With 14 comprehensive running programs to choose from and over 250 recipes, you can have your cake and eat it too without having to worry about planning delicious and nutritious meals between sessions. At the moment, BiteRunner is only available for iPhone users but Android users should keep their eyes peeled.

3. Lorna Jane

Looking for an active living companion? Look no further than Lorna Jane’s app to power you through every workout. Whether it be a run, walk or cycle, this app will give you all the motivation you need through wonderful words of encouragement to make sure you never give up.

Asics have been at the forefront of the running game for a number of years so it’s no surprise that their running app made our list. My Asics lets you create a smart, customised training plan based off their years of research into running performance. 5. RunKeeper

Whether you’re just getting off the couch for a cheeky 5km, training for a 10km or are deep into training for a half marathon, RunKeeper will help get you there faster.
