Fans of yoga tights, sweatpants and workout tanks outside the gym, rejoice! The word “athleisure” will be added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in 2016.
According to Merriam-Webster, via The New York Times, athleisure will be defined as “casual clothing designed to be worn both for exercising and for general use.”
With the health and fitness market growing faster than ever before, it’s clear that more and more of us are embracing this beneficial way of living. According to a recent report from Morgan Stanley, sports apparel and footwear sales have increased 42 percent over the past seven years and the active wear industry is expected to add $83 billion in sales globally by 2020. So, it’s really no surprise that athleisure has been added to the dictionary.
But athleisure is so much more than simply wearing regular gym clothing as part of your everyday wardrobe. It’s about finding items that fuse an athletic inspired silhouette and performance fabrics with the versatility of casual wear.
And with designers embracing athleisure wear as well, it’s easier than ever to achieve this look. Think Alexander Wang’s sporty luxe collections, Kanye West x adidas Originals collaboration, Tory Burch’s “Tory Sport” collection and Lululemon’s chic apparel. It has also become popular among e-tailers, with Stylerunner, Mode Sportif and Net-A-Sporter spearheading the online athleisure movement.
Comfortable, functional and fashionable – we’re glad athleisure is here to stay!
