Home remedies are something of a lost art, but it was once common knowledge which household herbs could be whipped up in to a tea or a tincture to treat a number of ailments. With more and more people adopting healthier lifestyles, interest is building around what we can use naturally to better our health. These are my top five herbs and spices to always keep on hand for a quick health fix!

Ginger

Fresh is best, and it’s super easy to grate this rhizome up and make a tea for period pain or nausea. Just keep the lid on while it brews as it keeps all the good stuff in! Feeling the sniffles? Add a spoonful of Manuka honey and you’ve got a warming, cold-blasting tonic to get you on your feet again.

Fennel seeds

There is no better treatment for tummy bloating and poor digestion than fennel! Grind the dried seeds up and make a tea, or dry-fry them whole and sprinkle them over your favourite veggies!

Cinnamon

This spice tastes delicious on all kinds of sweet treats, but interestingly cinnamon also actually balances blood sugar to help keep those chocolate cravings at bay. Adding half a teaspoon to your morning smoothie is a great way to get your craving-free day started.

Cloves

Got a painful mouth ulcer? Skip the painkillers and use this all-natural anaesthetic instead. Rub a little of the ground spice around the area to numb the pain. They also provide the added benefit of fighting off infection.

Cayenne pepper

Capsaicin is the superhero here that helps to get your metabolism going first thing in the morning. A pinch of dried cayenne in hot water with lemon juice is a good way to go. Follow it up with a chaser of green tea if you really want to maximise those fat-burning effects!
