Coconut water goes green! Why coconut water with super greens is perfect post-workout!

To say I’m a fan of coconut water would be something of an understatement. My feelings for coconut water are definitely love… almost bordering on being a full-blown obsession! I’m also a total advocate of taking a green superfoods blend containing things like spirulina, chlorella, barley grass, wheat grass, alfalfa grass or marine plant minerals to give your body a big hit of nutrients. Especially in times when you’re feeling rundown or your diet has been less than ideal.

Sarah Ranawake, Sporteluxe editorial director, health and wellness bloggerHowever, it’s the combo of coconut water and green superfoods which I wanted to talk about in this blog. Just like raw chocolate and nuts (or Jay-Z and Beyoncé) it’s a classic example of when two individually amazing things come together and are elevated to a whole new level of awesomeness. Put simply this combo is the perfect post-workout beverage. Nature’s ultimate sports drink if you will. Why? Well, the best way to explain it is by looking at the individual properties of these two ingredients.

First, coconut water. Coconut water is packed with potassium and electrolytes, which makes it amazing for rehydration. Exactly what you need after exercise! Green superfoods blends are highly alkalising and contain an array of vitamins, nutrients, minerals and antioxidants to give you an instant energy boost. Not to mention the fact that spirulina also has seriously high amounts of absorbable protein! And, as we all know, it’s super important to get a protein hit after training.

Health nerds out there might also be interested in this quirky fact. Did you know that coconut water is almost identical to human blood plasma? In WWII coconut water was even used intravenously to save the lives of soldiers. True story! The other part of our blood, haemoglobin, is essentially converted chlorophyll. According to quirky superfoods guru David Wolfe this means that super green coconut water is like the beverage equivalent of a blood transfusion. Which explains why you’ll feel so recharged and revitalised after drinking this awesome concoction. Incidentally, super green coconut water is also a great natural pick-me-up whenever you’re rundown, sick or stressed.

Want to give this super green coconut water drink a try? All you need to do is crack open a chilled fresh coconut and pour the water into a blender. Add a teaspoon or two of green superfood powder and whiz it up. Then transfer it back into the coconut and serve. Of course this last step is totally for aesthetic purposes. But, for me, there’s nothing better than drinking coconut water straight from the nut – whether it is turbo-charged with super greens or not!
