It’s the low-sugar fruit everyone is obsessed with. Delicious in smoothies (try Gwyneth Paltrow’s gut-loving recipe here) chia puddings, protein pancakes and healthy desserts—the humble little superfood is hailed for its high antioxidant count which helps boost immunity, fight free radicals and promote glowing skin.
1. Fresh blueberries contain the highest amount of antioxidants among all commonly consumed fruit and vegetables.
2. They promote hair growth thanks to the fact they contain chemicals (proanthocyanidins) which stimulate hair follicles.
3. They can prevent premature greying which can result from a B12 deficiency. B vitamins are crucial to inhibiting hair from losing its pigment, and they’re found in abundance in fresh blueberries.
Blueberries, when digested, work wonders for a younger, clearer complexion. Same goes when applied directly onto your face! The antioxidants found in this superfood help protect against premature signs of ageing and increases elasticity and collagen production. Blueberries also work to neutralise oil levels which subsequently prevents breakouts and evens out skin tone.
Why not give the below a go on your next Friday night in or self-care Sunday? Your body (and skin) will love you for it! Oh, and did we mention it’s totally fine to eat an entire punnet one serve? In fact, it’s recommended!
Simply mix 1/2 cup crushed fresh blueberries with 1 cup plain yoghurt. Apply for 20 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.
Note: Yoghurt contains lactic acid, which promotes new cell turnover.
Blend together 1/4 cup fresh blueberries, 1 tsp of olive oil and 1 tbs of honey. Apply liberally to hair and rinse after 20 minutes.
Note: A natural antiseptic, honey possesses superior antibacterial enzymes that work to unclog pores and keep breakouts at bay.
