It was greenery in 2017 and ultraviolet in 2018. Now, the colour Gods at Pantone have spoken once again, making their prediction for the biggest shade of 2019. If you’re not familiar, The Pantone Color Institute releases a report at the end of each year, forecasting the biggest colour trends for the year ahead. While this used to be mainly used by print and textile designers, its impact is now more far-reaching, making its mark in everything from fashion and beauty to interiors and graphic design.
This year, Pantone has named the colour of 2019 ‘living coral’. Not quite pink and not quite orange, the shade is closer to a vibrant-yet-warm blood orange. While it’s a fun, modern shade, it also has a deeper meaning—it’s a nod to our endangered coral reefs.
The colour authority said in a statement “PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral emits the desired, familiar, and energizing aspects of color found in nature. In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent color mesmerizes the eye and mind. Lying at the center of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, PANTONE Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.”
