February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and with three Australian women diagnosed with ovarian cancer each day, it is definitely a cause that deserves our attention.
The annual campaign is designed to raise awareness, highlight the symptoms of ovarian cancer, honour those women who have died from the disease as well as raise funds for research and treatments.
How to spot the symptoms of ovarian cancer
The symptoms of ovarian cancer are often vague. So it helps to be aware of what they can include:
- Changes in your bowel habits
- Excessive bloating
- Abdominal or pelvic pain
- Unexplained weight gain or weight loss
- Bleeding in-between periods or after menopause
- Back pain
- Indigestion or nausea
- Excessive fatigue
- Pain during intercourse
If any of these symptoms are persistent and out of character for you, it is advisable to speak to your GP who may recommend about a blood test or internal ultrasound.
