While your giant list of things to do away with involving sustainability is growing, you can add one more thing to the mix, haircare. Surprisingly enough, this beauty giant is also a giant contributor to the way we are polluting our Earth. While makeup isn’t vital to our survival, we definitely feel the need to wash our hair every once in a while. That’s where Act+Acre comes in. The brand uses revolutionary sustainable technology to “cold-press” their products. Their method applies ice-cold water at high pressure to combine their essential oils and other ingredients. This ensures the active ingredients remain fresh and highly potent, just as nature intended. And get this – not using heat means they use 90% less energy. They recently launched their travel collection as well, which is comprised of five limited edition items: Act+Acre Travel Essentials—each of which are designed to support you when traveling.
People are traveling more than ever and one of the biggest pain points is maintaining the consistency of our daily beauty rituals, especially hair care, on-the-go. The culprits? Poor quality hotel products like plastic combs, unforgiving towels, and synthetic pillowcases. Act+Acre has thoughtfully curated a range of travel standards, including travel-friendly sizes of their cult-favorite Cold Processed Hair Cleanse and Hair Conditioner, an intelligent towel, a bamboo comb, and a state-of-the-art, vegan bamboo pillowcase. Whether you’re jet-setting for business or pleasure, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice the small practices that reveal your best self. Act+Acre wants to help make your hair — and your trip— a little smoother.
We sat down with founders Helen Reavey and Colm Mackin to find out more about Act+Acre and how a booming career lead to the start of their company.
Having worked for many years in a hair salon in Dublin, as hard as it was leaving my family and friends I always knew I wanted to work and live in New York. So off I went in pursuit of the big “NYC Dream”. I was fortunate enough to start my New York career with hair legend Sam McKnight and under his direction, I styled Fashion Weeks around the world.
It was actually in 2017 when I was directing my own show at Couture shows in Paris, my husband Colm flew out to surprise me. He really saw me in action, dealing with the models, stylists, designers and how I directed my team and he made me think about creating my own brand. It was then that Act+Acre was born, at least as an idea.
Having worked in the hair industry for 15 years, I became increasingly conscious of the health of others scalps, which really led me on a journey striving to create products that were not only better for you but also better for the world. We developed a cold process method for manufacturing our products that use 90% less energy. No heat, just cold air and pressure to maintain the effectiveness of all the beautiful plant-based ingredients we use. It’s mind-blowing to think that those ingredients don’t exist at the end of the process when made the traditional way.
Yes! Can you believe that the scalp ages much faster than our face yet we put so much emphasis on our skin. Our scalp is an extension of our face and equally important if not more. Our scalp needs to nourished, balanced and moisturized to help fight against sun damage and aging. We need to remove dead skin, product build-up and pollution to allow the hair follicle to breathe and receive nutrients that it needs for healthy hair growth.
I started looking into how hair products were produced and made. She found that all hair products were made through the addition of harsh chemicals and high temperatures, boiling off any natural ingredients that were included, and reducing the potency and effectiveness of the products. As a spinoff of this, she figured out a new way to make hair care products, using a Cold Processed Method—now an exclusive patented process. Cold processing works by adding all the natural ingredients to a hyperbaric chamber and using freezing temperatures and high pressure to fuze the emulsion together. During this process, we use 90% less energy and our ingredients remain at their highest nutrient level. 97% more than traditional competitors, to be exact.
I really love The Essentials which is the easy three-step system to a healthier scalp and hair. It consists of the Scalp Detox, Hair Cleanse, and Conditioner.
We are very excited to launch Act+Acre Travel. A thoughtfully curated range of travel standards to compliment your daily routine, creating a home away from home. Whether you’re jet-setting for business or pleasure, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice the small practices that reveal your best self.
