We all want perfectly primped and polished digits. But, why is it we can rarely can get a mani as magnificent as the nail salon? Here, Gaynor August, Salon Director of Sydney’s Lash & Lacquer reveals how. Photo: Courtesy of Lash & Lacquer
Just as the same haircut doesn’t suit everyone, neither will the same manicure. “Different shapes and lengths suit and flatter different hands and nails,” says August. Long fingers and nail beds suit most shapes while soft, round edges are the most flattering for wider nails.
TREAT YOUR NAILS
August recommends using jojoba oil to treat cuticles. “Massaging the cuticle area is also another way of increasing the strength and appearance of the nail by increasing blood flow,” advises August.
The trick to the perfect manicure is to always select colours that flatter your skin tone and match what you wear. “Pale and neutral shades are safe options while I prefer dark shades on short nails,” admits August.
If you prefer gels, August advises having them removed in salon where a nail technician can soak them off expertly. “It’s very important not to use pure acetone as this will cause your nails to dry out, peel an possibly break,” she says.
TOP IT UP
August says a perfect manicure should last up to a week. “But in summer, things like sunscreen, insect repellent and swimming in salt or chlorinated water can dull or scratch your polish.” Avoid this by refreshing your nails with a top coat every couple of days.
