We’ve reached the tipping point with pumpkin spice. If you were ever slightly embarrassed to order a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks—it’s just so basic—there’s no longer a need to avoid eye contact while rattling off your coffee order. Everywhere you look, there’s pumpkin spice flavored chocolates, pastries, protein bars, candles, donuts—even hummus!
There’s no shame in our game: We’re so down to embrace the change in season and live that pumpkin spice life. Instead of buying artificially flavored goodies, we’re going all-natural and whipping up a batch of our own pumpkin pie spice blend that can be used in pretty much anything you cook up.
Here’s the super simple recipe and our favorite ways to use it this fall.
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Add all ingredients together into a bowl. Whisk until fully blended, and store in a small glass container.
Brew a whole batch of PSL-inspired coffee and luxuriate in the two best smells in the world—fresh coffee and fall. Just add a teaspoon or two (depending on how strong you want it) to coffee grounds and get brewing.
The bite of chai tea perfectly compliments the cinnamon and cloves in pumpkin pie spice. Add a teaspoon to a loose leaf chai tea and place the mix in a fabric tea bag. Brew for 2 to 4 minutes, until it reaches desired strength.
Anywhere from 1/2 a teaspoon to 1 tablespoon blends easily into cooked oatmeal. Try drizzling a little raw honey or maple syrup over the top for extra sweetness.
Make a vegan pumpkin spice chia pudding cup in less than 10 minutes! Blend together 1 cup almond milk, 2 tablespoons chia seeds, and 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice in a small bowl. Let sit and gel for 10 minutes. When the chia has reached a tapioca-like texture, add to a high-speed blender and blitz until totally smooth. Voila!
So genius, how didn’t we think of it sooner? Stir in 1/2 a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice for every cup of batter.
Ever woke up and thought to yourself, “I could totally drink a pumpkin pie right now”? Same. Turns out you can, and it’s actually incredibly healthy! Just mix half a can of pumpkin puree (which is high in fiber and antioxidants), 1 cup of almond milk, one frozen banana, a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, and a tablespoon of honey in a high-speed blender. All of the holiday flavor, zero guilt.
Pumpkin spice almond butter is totally a thing. Instead of splurging on a jar that’s high in sugar and highly processed, make your own for half the price. Simply add one cup of raw almonds or peanuts to the food processor and blend on high until creamy and smooth. Then add pumpkin pie spice by the teaspoon until you get the flavor you like. (Spoiler alert: This is amazing on everything!)
This sweet and savory seasonal popcorn is such a treat. Use coconut oil to pop the kernels and sprinkle pumpkin pie spice over the finished product. Want to jazz it up? Drizzle melted white chocolate over the still-hot popcorn and toss with dried cranberries and a bit of sea salt.
