As I wrote about here, I recently went off The Pill after being on it for nearly 12 years. While I’ve managed to keep my skin under control so far, there’s been another interesting (and annoying) side effect. My once borderline dry hair has become crazy oily, thanks to my body’s sebum production levels going in to overdrive. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for shiny locks. But this is definitely more greasy than glossy — in fact, it looks exactly how I did when I was going through puberty when I was 13. Not a good look!
Never one to just let a problem sit, I immediately starting researching products that can help tame greasy hair. I was surprised to discover that there really aren’t a lot of hair products out there specifically targeted for oily hair! Go to any chemist and you’ll find hundreds designed for dry or coloured hair, but nothing for oily! Luckily, they do exist — you just need to dig a little deeper as they won’t necessarily be described as being for greasy hair (it’s not very sexy marketing.) But to save you the hassle, I’ve rounded up 7 must-have hair products for gals with oily locks.
1. Carita Haute Beaute Cheveu Purifying Mask
Purifying masks are fantastic for adding some much-needed ‘oomph’ back into limp tresses. But for oily hair, you don’t want to go for anything too heavy — which is why this light mousse product is perfect!
2. Akhal Beauty Pure Rhassoul Clay
This multi-tasking product helps to soak up excess oil, while still softening and moisturising your hair. You can use it as a mask or in place of your shampoo.
3. Phyto Phythéol Oily Hair Scalp-Exfoliating Shampoo
Oily hair stems from an oily scalp. This exfoliating shampoo addresses the root (literally) of the problem by reducing your scalp’s sebum production, while also detoxifying the build-up of excess product.
4. Bumble and Bumble Pret-a-Powder
Over-washing your hair can actually make your hair oilier, so a good dry shampoo will be your best friend between washes. This one from Bumble and Bumble doubles as a style extended and adds va-va-voom volume, too.

5. Maple Holistics Degrease Natural Shampoo
You know how you can use jojoba oil to balance out oily skin? Well, the same works goes for your hair. This ridiculously efficient shampoo is enriched with it, as well as a bunch of other natural detoxifying ingredients.
6. Percy And Reed No Oil Oil
We know, the thought of putting oil in already oily hair is kind of terrifying. But we promise this nifty little product works wonders for turning greasy locks into smooth, sleek tresses. It comes in two version — for fine or thick hair.
7. De Lorenzo Control Intense Conditioner
When it comes to conditioning oily hair, you need to keep it super lightweight. That’s we love this specially formulated De Lorenzo Conditioner. It gets the job done without weighing down your hair or leaving behind residue.
