At home with biodynamic winemaker Jeff Aston

There’s no doubt that cozying up with a good glass of wine by the fireplace is what makes winter a little more tolerable. In true Sporteluxe form, however, we would choose none other then to have a bottle of biodynamic red wine by our side.

Biodynamic wine, as you may have read, is a more natural approach to making wine and is on the rise in Sydney. With a richer, more authentic taste, natural wines benefit from the real nutritional value of fermented grapes compared to more processed alternatives (hello, hangovers). Places like Darlinghurst’s Bar Brosé have a large selection to choose from, whilst TimeOut has rounded up the top bars to drink the good stuff in all it’s natural glory.

With this in mind, Sporteluxe’s own Bianca Cheah recently visited biodynamic brand,  Tractorless Vineyard in The Southern Highlands. She had the opportunity to chat with owner, Jeff Aston, and take a sneak peak inside his sustainable home. Cheese, avocado, olive and wine tasting inevitably ensued.

So what is a Tractorless Vineyard, you may wonder? It’s described as a lifestyle celebrating and combining the old with the new ways of wine making. It excludes, you guessed it, the use of tractors and harmful chemicals.

“Tractorless Vineyard embraces a combination of old world knowledge and skills with new world techniques all guided by Biodynamic principles. The aim is to reduce our resource use by the integration of natural farming systems in our vineyards to provide a more long term sustainably balanced and diverse farming system that can continue to produce award winning wines.” tractorlessvineyard.com

Wherever you find yourself this weekend, we hope it’s a good excuse to hop on the healthy bandwagon and grab a natural bottle (or two). If not for yourself, then for the sake of sustainability (wink, wink).
