Almond Butter, Chocolate, Peanut Butter…These Are Our Fav Protein Bars

Some eat them as a pre or post-workout pick-me-up. Or maybe you’re like me and sometimes just can’t get organized enough to meal prep for every day of the week: enter the protein bars.

Depending on what benefits you’re looking for, there is a different bar out there for every need. Some boast high protein levels for the workout-conscious and others offer simply no BS ingredients for the health-conscious. And some fool people into thinking you’re making a healthy choice by eating a protein bar, when in reality–many are comparable to eating a candy bar. The editors at the Sporteluxe LA office were on a mission to find the best tasting ( and better for you) protein bars and this is what we found.

1.Perfect Bar

Calories: 310

Protein: 13g

Best flavor: Almond Butter and Chocolate Walnut Brownie

Pros: Non-GMO, 20 superfoods, Gluten Free

Editors comments: The Perfect Bar was the office favorite. These bars are different than others on the market because of their unique need to be refrigerated. And for a good reason! Since Perfect Bar is made with all natural, real ingredients it makes sense that it would need to be kept fresh. (So don’t miss out in the grocery store– they’re in the fridge!) We tried 8 flavors and can’t say a bad thing about any of them. Sporteluxe founder Bianca Cheah is such a fan, she ordered a huge case of the Almond Butter after trying it!

2. RX Bar

Calories: 210

Protein: 12g

Best flavor:  Peanut Butter Chocolate

Pros:  Egg whites for protein, very few ingredients, no BS

Editors comments: These bars are chewy, so beware that they might stick to your teeth (shout out to Victoria who didn’t let me know until it was too late!). What we love about the RX bars is their use of few, simple ingredients that are clearly stated on the packaging of each bar. This means no BS, no surprises. Pro tip from our Brand Partnership Manager: Cut up an RX Bar and use as a topping for your yogurt, granola or acai bowls!

3. R.e.d.d

Calories: 220

Protein: 10g

Best Flavor: Chocolate Superfood Energy Bar

Pros: Gluten & soy free, Non-GMO, kosher, vegan, brown rice syrup free

Editors comments: R.e.d.d is spot on when they say “All killer. No Filler”. These bars are packed with 11 superfoods and  23 vitamins and minerals, which is a big punch for a little bar! Overall the Chocolate Superfood Energy Bar was the fan favorite but a close second is the Salted Caramel. It is really sweet– but in a good way. More like you’re getting the satisfaction of eating “sweets” but without the guilt. Side note: These days, packaging matters. And R.e.d.d nails it. Each flavor comes packaged in a different color and having one of each flavor in your cabinet is an OCD persons dream!

4. Bearded Brothers

Calories: 135

Protein: 5g

Best flavor: Radical Raspberry Lemon

Pros: Vegan, gluten & soy free, paleo, no added sugar, nut free, low glycemic, 5g fiber, 270g chia seeds

Editors comments: These bars are definitely different than the others, they have more of a fruit roll-up type of texture. Flashback to childhood! As an avid hiker myself, I was excited to see a company that was created for the adventurous people of the world and gives such a high-quality bar that is packed with ingredients that truly make you feel like your best self. If you’re looking for a bar that offers fuel for your body without the BS that makes your energy levels lag, Bearded Bros is the way to go!

5. Vega

Calories: 290

Protein: 20 g

Best flavor: Chocolate caramel protein snack bar

Pros: High in protein, gluten free, non-gmo, all sourced from plant-based ingredients, 3g fiber

Editors comments: This is one of those aforementioned candy bar tasting bars. Which in this case isn’t a bad thing because it is packed with plant proteins. Despite the fact that a lot of people consume whey protein by the scoopful, it is actually pretty common for people to have sensitivities to it (not too fond of the acne side effects either!). We really like the Vega Bars to get that alternative source of protein.

6. Kalumi

Calories: 230

Protein: 15g

Best flavor: Lemon Love

Pros: Gluten-free, Non-GMO

Editors comments: The Kalumi bars are different than we expected and really don’t compare to the taste or texture of the others. You can tell that this bar is more artisanal–it crumbles in your mouth as you bite into it. What we really love is that in addition to the high amounts of protein, these bars also offer added benefits– like collagen– and you all know that we’re always looking for more ways to get our daily dose of collagen!
