BRB, gotta go balance my chakras.
Although the buzzword chakras gets thrown around quite frequently, the complex chakra system can confuse even the most aspiring of spiritual sages among us. What exactly are chakras anyway, and why do they need to stay balanced?
The seven chakras are the centers in our bodies in which energy flows through. As with everything, balance is key. The goal is to keep each chakra open and unblocked, with an even balance of energy between them. If any one chakra is under or over working, your emotional and physically body can be shifted out of alignment.
For as new-agey as it sounds, chakras actually have ancient roots! The word chakra is Sanskrit for “wheel” – a hint to their role for keeping things running smoothly. Want to keep the good vibes rolling? We’re breaking down what each chakra represents and what can be done to keep this energy flowing freely.
Located at the base of the spine in the tailbone area, the root chakra represents our foundation and provides a sense of both physical and emotional grounding and security.
When imbalanced, a blocked root chakra can manifest into behaviors ruled by fear (insecurity, greed, paranoia, etc). To open up your root chakra, engage with grounding, earth-based activities like gardening, hiking and healthy cooking.
Seated just below the navel, this sensual chakra is associated with emotions, sexuality, and creativity. As the driving force for seeking pleasure, it rules the senses and allows you to feel more in-tune with the world around you.
Imbalance of the sacral chakra can manifest as feeling “stuck”, dependency and codependency, and overindulgence or lack of sexual desire. Awaken the senses through essential oils or get your body’s energy flowing through dance to keep the sacral chakra open.
Associated with a bright golden yellow (think rays of sunshine), the solar plexus rules personal power, identity and personality – helping feed one’s direction in life and bring ideas to reality. When running smoothly you tend to tap into greater clarity and experience ease of decision-making.
In turn, a blocked solar plexus can impact your confidence, self-worth and self-esteem. To bring things back into balance, try sunbathing (with SPF, of course!) meditating or doing yoga outdoors.
As to be expected, the heart chakra is all about -L-O-V-E. Coloring our life with compassion and beauty, when in alignment this chakra brings a sense of joy and inner peace.
Blocked heart chakra? Ugh, we all know how that feels. Crystals and gemstones can be used to activate the love energy center. Rose quartz, clear quartz and jade are a good place to start!
Located at the base of the throat and ruling communication, the throat chakra is about the expression of yourself: your truth, purpose in life and creativity. A blocked throat chakra can contribute to stifled creativity or bring up feelings of insecurity and fear of expression. On the other end, an overactive throat chakra may lead to gossipy and verbally aggressive behaviors.
Considered a hue for cleansing, the color blue has a calming effect that can help ease mental stress. Try a dip in the ocean or a relaxing warm bath to restore balance!
As the center of intuition and foresight, the third eye chakra rules imagination, wisdom and the ability to make clear decisions. Associated with the pineal gland and in charge of regulating your body’s rhythms, this chakra can influence sleep cycles and mental clarity if out of balance.
To open your third eye center, try to silence the mind by tapping into a regular meditation practice.
The seventh chakra is located at the top of the head, offering a sense of connectedness and access to higher states of consciousness. This is our ultimate connection to spirituality and pure bliss! Because of its location, the crown chakra is closely associated with the brain and the entire nervous system.
Imbalance of the crown chakra can result in living too much “in your head”, mental fog, anxiety and disconnect from others. To bring back flow to the seventh chakra, focus on eating nourishing foods, practicing gentle yoga, and getting out into the sunlight.
As always, wellness is a life-long journey. If you sense an imbalance in any one chakra, don’t fret! Simply relax and focus on rebalancing the energy center through healthy lifestyle choices.
