If you’re into wellness, it’s pretty much a given that you’ve at least tried kombucha.
And if you’re like us, you’re borderline obsessed with the stuff. It’s tasty, but not unhealthy Bubbly, but strictly sober. Plus, kombucha tea is an excellent source of beneficial probiotics and antioxidants … Unless you really can’t stand the flavor, there’s no real reason not to enjoy it every now and then.
Admittedly, though, some brands are a bit healthier than others. Kombucha gets the side-eye from some wellness experts who believe the brew contains too much sugar. It’s true—cane sugar is added into the kombucha fermentation process. But that’s because those healthy probiotic bacteria feed on sugar. As they eat through the sugars added to the brew, they cause the drink to ferment and allow for the creation of more beneficial bacteria. Ideally, most of that sugar gets “eaten” up by the probiotics during fermentation.
But not all bottles are created equal, and some kombucha has a lot more sugar than you might realize. Here’s how your favorite bottles rank:
1. Brew Dr. Kombucha, Superberry
Grams of sugar per serving: 5 grams
Made with high-quality, organic teas and organic cane sugar, Brew Dr. Kombucha is a pretty legit bottle to pick up if you’re looking for a probiotic fix. In their most palatable flavor, Superberry, there’s 10 grams of sugar in the 14-ounce bottle.
2. GT’s Synergy Organic Kombucha, Strawberry Serenity
Sugar per serving: 4 grams
One of the most well-known brands of ‘booch out there, GT’s has a massive fan following. The brand was one of the first to bring kombucha to the mass market—you can find extra large sized glass containers of GT’s many flavors at Costco and Whole Foods. In the classic Strawberry Serenity flavor there are 8 grams of sugar in the 16-ounce bottle.
3. Health-Ade Kombucha, Pink Lady Apple
Grams of sugar per serving: 3 grams
Ah, Health-Ade, how we love you! Bright and refreshing, this bottle is chock-full of bubbles and probiotic goodness—and a surprisingly low sugar count.
4. Kevita Master Brew Kombucha, Grapefruit
Grams of sugar per serving: 8 grams
Kevita is probably the most supermarket-friendly brand on this list. You’re likely to find it next to bottles of Naked Juice smoothies in the produce department. It’ll do in a pinch, but if you have the option pick another brand. Kevita has 16 grams of sugar in each bottle of kombucha—that’s equivalent to sucking down four teaspoons of granulated sugar!
