Why More And More Millennials Are Choosing Not To Drink On The Weekends In The Name Of Wellness

We're in the midst of a cultural shift.

Sure, you still have those friends that come 5pm on a Friday, they’re already lining up at the bar excited about happy hour, the ones that go out drinking every Saturday night without fail and back it up with a cheeky Sunday sesh.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, you’ve got the ones that are more open to a glass or two of wine with dinner and a couple of drinks when they’re out, if that.
As it turns out, you might be surprised to know that contrary to popular belief, more and more millennials are leaning towards the latter, much preferring to wake up on a Sunday morning feeling fresh and able to do things they wouldn’t necessarily do if they spent the day hungover, under the covers binge-watching Netflix.

As Forbes reported last year, millennials are prioritizing their wellbeing so that they can “show up powerfully to their personal and professional lives”. This reflects a growing trend around the world for younger people choosing not to drink alcohol.
UNSW also released a report on the back of new data from The Australian Bureau of Statistics which shows that alcohol consumption has reached its lowest point since the early 1960s, driven almost entirely by the younger population.
Further research has also shown that exercising, eating well and avoiding alcohol and other drugs are important lifestyle choices for many young people, with an increased focus on healthy living specifically. The significant shift towards the mindfulness movement means that the younger generation are more intuitive when it comes to their own body and acknowledging the effects of alcohol as a depressant. In saying that, people are finding that they’re getting their “high” from other self-care activities such as meditation, yoga and fitness.

But of course, we’re not here to tell you to NEVER drink again, and that if you do, you don’t care for your body. Not at all. Here at Sporteluxe, we’re all about achieving that healthy balance and enjoying everything in moderation (because, how good is having a drink with the girls on a hot summer’s day or on date night at your favourite restaurant with your partner?).
What we’re here to tell you is that there ARE still ways to still enjoy a drink or two, minus the heavy alcohol content which then leads you to wake up feeling like a bus has hit you. Virgin drinks, conscious cocktails and mocktails are gaining popularity as a great alternative for health-conscious individuals, and one brand which is paving the way for this is Angostura https://angostorabitters.com.
Widely recognisable by it’s yellow cap and oversized label, ANGOSTURA® is a concentrated bitters made from a blend of herbs and spices (fun fact: it was once used to treat stomach ailments back in the day).
It’s 100% natural with no artificial colours, flavours or additives and globally recognised as an essential bar ingredient for classic and contemporary cocktails and of course, Australia’s favourite thirst-quencher, lemon, lime and bitters.
Here are some super easy recipes courtesy of ANGOSTURA® that you can make yourself at home (or order on your next night out!).
